How Canadian Taxes Work

How HST, GST, PST, and QST are calculated for your province, and how to handle tax-exempt customers and fix a wrong amount.

Contents

Wenmar Pro calculates Canadian sales tax for you. It knows the rates for every province and applies them automatically to your work orders — so you don’t have to look up HST, GST, PST, or QST rates or do the math by hand.

💡 You’ll need

  • Your shop’s province set in Settings → Business Profile

How Tax Is Calculated

Tax rates are determined by your shop location’s province and follow CRA guidelines. Wenmar Pro applies the correct rate automatically:

  • Ontario — 13% HST
  • BC — 5% GST + 7% PST (labor and sublet are PST-exempt)
  • Quebec — 5% GST + 9.975% QST
  • Alberta, Yukon, NWT, Nunavut — 5% GST
  • Saskatchewan — 5% GST + 6% PST
  • Manitoba — 5% GST + 7% RST
  • New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland — 15% HST

You can see your shop’s exact rates in Settings → Business Profile → Tax Breakdown. This is read-only — the rates come from your province, so you don’t set them yourself.

Setting Your Province

Go to Settings → Business Profile, set your Province / State, and click Save. If no province is set, Wenmar Pro defaults to 5% GST and shows a warning.

How Tax Appears on a Work Order

Each service on a work order has Labor Tax and Parts Tax toggles. New services inherit your shop’s defaults. The work order totals show Labor Tax and Parts Tax separately, plus a combined Tax row labeled with your province’s rate (like “HST (13%)”).

Handling Tax-Exempt Customers

Some customers (like resellers or certain organizations) are tax-exempt.

Step 1: Mark the customer tax-exempt

Open the customer and turn on Tax exempt customer. Enter their Certificate / Registration # (this is required).

Step 2: Confirm on the work order

When a tax-exempt customer is on a work order, new services automatically have tax turned off. You can check the Tax exempt number on the work order’s customer card.

Fixing a Wrong Tax Amount

  • Per service — Open the service and toggle Labor Tax or Parts Tax on or off.
  • Per line item — For a part, fee, or sublet, toggle Taxable on or off.
  • Per province — In Settings → Core Tax Rules, you can control whether core charges and core credits are taxed for each province.

Wenmar Pro recalculates tax automatically whenever a work order’s line items change.

Tips

  • Set your province first — Everything else follows from it.
  • Add your GST/HST number — Enter it in Settings → Business Profile → GST/HST # so it’s on your records.
  • Check tax-exempt customers — Make sure the certificate number is on file, or tax will be charged.
